How to Get Involved at Smith Springs
There are so many ways you can get involved with Smith Springs Elementary.
You can also get started on your PENCIL Partner Background Check. All of our volunteers must pass a background check if they are going to work one-on-one with our students.
Reading Buddies
Our Reading Buddy Program asks volunteers to contribute 30 minutes a week to practice reading one-on-one with a student. They would be paired with this student for the entire semester and meet on the same day and at the same time each week. The students would work on their reading fluency and comprehension with the volunteer in one of our open rooms.
PTA
SSES has an amazing PTA that supports many school initiatives and hosts events all year. Some events are free for our families, such as the Duck the Halls and Spring Block Party events. Others costs money, such as the Welcome Back Dance and Fall Festival. All events are open to all of the SSES families and community. Our PTA is always looking for volunteers to help set up and run the different events they host for our families.
Watch D.O.G.S.
The Watch D.O.G.S. Program encourages male volunteers to be present in the school building. Students need positive male role models throughout their lives. The Dads of Great Students program provides opportunities for males to interact with students and participate in classes with them. Our Watch D.O.G.S. monitor the hallways, help with arrival/dismissal, hang out with students in the cafeteria, and volunteer in the classroom.
Holiday Duckling Tree
Each year around winter break, our school asks for the community to adopt SSES students who need a little extra support during the holiday season. We create a Holiday Duckling Tree with adoptable ducks. Each duck represents a SSES student or sibling that has something they need or want. Community members purchase the item(s) and bring them back to the school. Our students then receive the needs and wants before they leave for winter break.
SSES Incentives for Students and Staff
We love to support our students with positive incentives for things like attendance, behavior, accomplishments, and citizenship throughout the year. We are always looking for donations of items or funds to purchase these incentives. We also need volunteers for the different school based incentive events. These volunteers would help monitor students as they enjoy their party or event.
Our staff are some of the hardest working people around town. We love to show them how much they are appreciated and valued. We like to give them surprise notes of encouragement, food for professional development or meetings, and snacks. Our snacks are usually delivered once a month using our Happy Cart. We wheel our Happy Cart to each room and office and surprise our staff with goodies. We are always looking for sponsors to help share the love to our staff members.
